Cleaning the River Wandle
The River Wandle runs pretty clear through Colliers Wood, and is home to a wide variety of plant species, birds, reptiles, amphibians and small mammals. It is an essential element of the local eco system and environment so we are keen to make sure the Wandle remains a pollution free and attractive natural habitat for wildlife and the local community. The Friends Group, have formed a specialised River Group to care for the riverbanks and waterways with support and training from the South East Rivers Trust and the team who manage the Beverley Brook in Wimbledon Common. The River Group remove litter, the occasional shopping trolley and invasive plant species such as Himalayan Balsam. We operate as a small core group of trained volunteers and opportunities for new members to join are posted within our WhatsApp group. Although The Wandle stretches for 9 miles across the Wandle Valley our local volunteer group are only actively involved as it flows through Wandle Park and around Sainsbury’s in Colliers Wood.
